"External stress is from things you can't control, like being chased by a dinosaur. You get a fight-or-flight reaction." She gave the example of the stress reaction of a 90-pound woman who lifted a car off her child.
"Internal stress is the stress that we put on ourselves, such as we do when the holidays are coming up," Simon said. "The holidays are a stressful time for most people — the Christmas cards have to be out. The presents have to be gotten and wrapped. The Christmas dinner has to be perfect."
She explained another distinction. "Stress can be acute or chronic. Acute stress is how our bodies respond to an injury. Chronic stress is the kind of stress we feel around the holidays. Stress is not supposed to be chronic," she said.
