breathing exercises?

this is going to be one of them dumb question...but i have to ask because i really dont know..... are there any breathing exercises a person could do to help them not get gased out so fast..any tips .............


Actually, that's not a dumb question at all. I'm going to assume that you're talking about becoming winded when doing cardiovascular exercise. Basically, you want to establish a steady pattern of breathing when you're exercising. For me, when I jog, I take a breath in through my nose when my left foot hits the ground. The next time my left foot hits, i exhale out through the mouth. After a mile or two, I'll switch it over to the right foot just for a little variety.Experiment with it a little and find the pattern that works best for you.
If you're becoming winded when lifting weights, and yes, it can happen, remember to blow out when lifting the weight, and breath in when releasing it.
Another technique that I've used I picked up in a book on tai chi. You can do this when you're just sitting around, and I think it has helped me a little. Breath in for a count of four, then hold your breath for a count of four, then exhale for a count of four. Continue to do this as long as you can. It might be all in the mind, but it's worth a shot.

Does anyone know any good breathing exercises to help me breath longer under water? and basically hold my breath longer?


Blowing small bubbles does not prolong the time you can stay under water on a breath.
What you need to practice is something called hyperventilation. This is the process of removing as much co2 from your lungs as possible - as this is the stimulant that causes the brain to make you breathe. The process is simple, inhale fully and exhale fully 3 times. On the third breath hold it in and swim underwater. With practice you should be able to hold your breath for longer and longer.
Be careful not to do the inhale/exhale thing more than 3 times as this can lead to blackouts. The body has too little co2 and the reflex to breath doesn't happen. The brain then shuts the body down (effectively knocks you unconscious) to get your breathing back to normal. Obviously if this happens underwater you stand a good chance of drowning.

Unity Hospital opens wellness path for staff, community

Participants walked the 1.1-mile path that circles the Unity Hospital campus, getting their “pathport” checked off at five different wellness stations by getting their pulse checked, completing lunges, arm stretches, leg stretches and breathing exercises.

Construction of the path began last year at the same time that Unity started its exterior remodeling.

The path was completed this spring. It circles the entire Unity Hospital campus, which includes the Fridley Medical Center.

There had been no connecting sidewalks on Unity’s hospital grounds before the path was constructed.

Unity Hospital Vice President of Operations Patrick Belland said the city had wanted to put a sidewalk on the campus, so they decided to “take it to the next level.”

They had seen people walking in the parking lots for exercise before and decided to expand the idea.

Fridley Mayor Scott Lund spoke at the opening in favor of the new wellness path.

Both Lund and Unity Hospital President Lori Wightman expressed excitement that the path would bring individuals from the community to the hospital grounds when they’re not sick, as a matter of preventive health.
