I travel A LOT and my cats are unhappy... need advice?

I have 2 cats, both 3 years old. One is a siamese and one is a grey and white. I started dating a guy a year ago who lives 3 1/2 hours away. Because of this relationship and due to work, I travel a lot on the weekends. During the non holiday months I'm gone 2/4 weekends but in November I was gone 3/4 of the weekends and some of the week during Thanksgiving. During Christmas break I'll be gone for around 2 weeks.

The problem is this: My cats are very destructive when I leave, even if its just for the weekend. This started about 9 months ago and has gotten worse and worse. I have a huge saltwater aquarium in my kitchen. When I'd leave town, really expensive fish started disappearing and the fish would act scared to come to the surface when I would feed them. I am 90% sure the cats were catching the fish. I have seen one of them get on top of the tank and lay up there (I tell her no and shoo her off). One of the fish missing was worth $100. I have a special light for the tank and cannot put a hood on it.

I then started locking the cats in my craft room when I'd leave town. And they were fine for awhile. It's a large room and they have an automatic feeder and waterer, 2 litter boxes, and tons of toys. 4 months ago, I started finding crap on the floor every time I'd come home even though the litter boxes were pretty clean. If I lock them in that room for any amount of time one of them (I suspect the siamese) will crap on the floor. I had to lock them in there one day last week because maintenance was going in my townhouse to do some work and I didn't want the cats to accidently get outside, it was only for two hours, and I came home to crap on the floor. The litter boxes were immaculate.

A couple weekends ago I went camping and left them out and more fish disappeared again. One of which had been in my aquarium for 3 or 4 years.

They also claw up my furniture despite having scratching posts and mess up my craft supplies. I have to hide my yarn and feathers. One of them destroyed my yoga mat. I do put the soft paws claw covers on them but they do rip them off and I can't check them every day.

I know that they're bored and stressed when I'm gone, but I have to travel, so I really don't know what to do.

When I'm gone for more than a weekend I do have someone come by every day and check on them and play with them for a bit. I do think this helps some, as less stuff gets destroyed, but they still crap on the floor.

I have a pickup truck and my 2 dogs take up the entire back seat of the truck, so I don't have much room even if I wanted to take them with me when I travel to my boyfriends house. I think I may try that next. I know it will be unpleasant for them, but probably less so than being alone?

I have considered responsibly rehoming them. It's stressful to come home to a wreck every time. And its highly unsanitary for them to be crapping all over my office!! My living situation at the moment is far from optimal. When I finish graduate school (in 2 years), I'll move in with my boyfriend and much of the traveling will stop.

Any constructive advice would be appreciated.
I don't think me being away from my house 2 out of every 4 weekends and going home for the holidays is "abandoning" my cats. I am home nearly every week day unless its a holiday and I give them tons of attention when I'm home. They sleep in my bed and I play with them/snuggle constantly. I'm in graduate school and never get to see my family or my boyfriend! He does come see me. He comes down the other two weekends of the month.

I would say take them with you...buy a crate that you can put up when you get there so they don't escape...buy a travel box and leave it open in your house, with a cover over so they get used to it, take them for short jouneies in the box ( like to the shop and back) with the box covered and ignore any noise they make....that way you will get them used to travelling without stress............I used to travel and took dogs and the cats...even on holiday when I got there I would bring the cats in feed them and then the next day they would go out...they followed the dogs and I to the beach and back and always came with me...it got to point where as soon as I opened the car door in they would jump and travel with the dogs....but the first few times all I got was cats being sick and howling the whole route.....

I found this yoga mat online that is for travel that is $9.99. 68 inches vertical and 24 inches wide. If not, can someone please find me a cheap mat to buy?

That is a very good price but you can also go to 5-below and get one for 5.00! go figure along with other exercise equipment it works very well.
