Ganesh Statues - Sacred Statues

Why are Hindu Ganesh statues found in a lake?

At our local fresh water lake, we have been finding Hindu Ganesh statues in the water. They look fairly new (not antiques nor have they been in the water very long). They are slightly different from each other but all have an elephant head and some had small ribbons attached. They are ceramic and most were broken which I assume from them being tossed or just being churned in the water.

Anyone know if there is some sort of religious ceremonial reason the statues are in the water?

Just curious.

When I did a Google search, I came up with LOADS of articles about Ganesha statues being immersed ceremonially into lakes, including one story of a father and son who drowned while doing it! I finally found an answer at Wikipedia:

"Traditionally, the Ganesh icon was sculpted out of earth taken from nearby one’s home. After worshiping the divinity in this earth icon, it was returned back to the Earth by immersing it in a nearby water body. This cycle represented the cycle of creation and dissolution in Nature."

It goes on to say that modern Ganesh statues are made of plaster of Paris and painted with toxic paints, both of which poison lakes and rivers and result in many fish dying after Ganesh-immersion ceremonies. There is a move to return to making them from natural clay, or to doing symbolic immersions only, or to banning the ceremony altogether.

507 Ganesh statues carved on single root of teak wood...! Art is really rare one !He wants to sell it ?where?

One of my friend has rare wooden statue of shri Ganesh,507 ganesh statues carved on single root of teak wood.He wants to sell it to any renouned Ganesh temple or any celebrity..so that he can earn the right price for it..What is the best way for it..?how can he approach to the rich devotee celebrities..or rich temples...?

Not sure if there is a straight way to erach rich devotee or celebs. But one way to sell it would be ebay or some other portal which allows people to auction there own stuff.

My suggestion, if your friend is not in need of money straight away. Ask him to do some more artwork and then try to put up an exhibition.

Coming closer to Lord Ganesha through sculpture

The artisans informed that this year more than 60 sculptors are in the city to prepare the statues of Lord Ganesha. The cost of these statues range from Rs 500 for the small ones to Rs 11,000 for the big ones. They also make statues on demand.

Elaborating the sequence and process of making these pious statues, an artisan said that mainly the sculptures are made of mud and clay. But as per the new trend, the Ganesh idols are mostly made of plaster of Paris or China clay.

"We prepare Ganesh idol from China clay or mud. The demand these day is for idols made from plaster of Paris. These are lighter and more attractive. There is a difference between idols made from mud and plaster of Paris, said Niranjan Thakur, a statue-maker.

There are references in the Puranas that Ganapati was created from grime. Hence, the artisans find it appropriate to use a Ganesh idol made of mud for ritualistic worship.

It is worth mentioning here that as per the Hindu mythology, the spiritual Idols should be a seated one, not standing. A senior artisan informed about the reason why the Idols were made only in sitting position.

Is Yoga Kosher? - by Taffy Brodesser-Akner > Tablet Magazine - A ...

A few years ago, freshly moved to Los Angeles, I started practicing yoga. I was sensibility aching and suffering, and if I were still a New Yorker, I’d have gone on anti-depressants. But I’m a big believer in doing what the Romans do, and, as it turned out, yoga helped a lot. Now, in grade, as I take my first bow—a inflate upward, followed by an big-hearted-armed submerge to my toes—I am no longer thoughtful about survival. As an alternative, with allowance to suggest and evaluate, I as opposed to surprise about the implications of bowing, of doing yoga in the first position succeed. Yoga, with its meditation, with its unclear secrets and ties to Hinduism and Buddhism, isn’t moral a physiological application; it’s a sacred one. And I am a Fresh Traditional Jew. By practicing yoga, I’m now contrived to think, am I practicing a creed surface my own? Am I sinning before God?

When I first took up yoga, this examine never occurred to me. I was dealing with a arduous convenience life, but I had also forsaken my faithful rearing. I was at friendly with a temporal being that included some inebriated-festival celebration and crippling misconduct when I didn’t regard Passover. Now, married to a man who converted so that we could be together, I find myself perpetual an Common composed. (You cognizant of the old wordplay: don’t companion a non-Jew unless you impecuniousness to end up actually spiritual-minded.) I’m surprisingly favourable in my lifestyle, but I’m also realizing that a exactly immersion in yogic study may very well be a defilement of my Jewish one.

There is a casting of Ganesh, the Hindu diety, in the yoga studio I wait upon. At the end of the discernment, my don says, “ means, “The Splendiferous in me salutes the Gifted in you.” During many of the meditation sessions, we are asked to put our hands in “plea slant,” which is what it sounds like: hands joined together at the kindliness. The more I remembrances about it, the more I anxious that yoga might be its own dogma, and that I might be committing a sin—worshipping an fetish, even—by practicing it.
