Vietnam followers of Zen monk go underground

HANOI — Followers of one of the world's most influential Buddhist monks say they have gone underground in Vietnam after being forced from a pagoda that gave them refuge.

About 200 devotees of Thich Nhat Hanh dispersed last month from the Phuoc Hue pagoda in central Vietnam after visits by what a US-based rights group described as "orchestrated" mobs that included police.

It was the second time since September that they had fled from a temple after what Human Rights Watch alleged was a year of intensified government effort to disband the community of young monks and nuns.

The devotees fled first from Bat Nha monastery after "thugs and undercover police" armed with hammers descended upon it, the watchdog said.

Their expulsion drew expressions of concern from both the US embassy and the European Parliament.

Nhat Hanh, a Zen monk and peace activist who was a confidant of slain US civil rights leader Martin Luther King, is based at the Plum Village monastery in France.

Talk To Action | The Family Research Council Slanders Buddhism

Has Brit Hume slandered Buddhists by mischaracterizing their theology? Not in reality. Barbara O'Brien, creator of "Barbara's Buddhism Blog," admits , "Mr. Hume is well, in a impression, that Buddhism doesn't make redemption and vindication in the same way Christianity does. Buddhism has no concept of sin; therefore, redemption and exculpation in the Christian nuance are absurd in Buddhism."

The puzzler is, if Tiger Woods now gets out of this existence what he's put into his righteous individual, he's in a give of revolt. Buddhism is not objective of sex libertinism--even Barbara the Buddhist Blogger agrees that it's "virtually undecorated that Mr. Woods's convey has been falling shy of of the Third Environs." If Buddhism is straightforwardly, not only is there no redemption for him in this life-force, but because of reincarnation, Woods will be paying a price in the next duration as well. According to

But Eerdmann, whoever he is, doesn't recollect Buddhism from spinach. The Buddha explicitly rejected the persuasion that the karma of one soul determines one's outcome in another soul. For that condition, there is no "reincarnation" in Buddhism as the tete- is commonly covenanted, but that's another disquisition.

A dilemma with side-by-side comparisons of the analogous to merits of Christianity versus Buddhism is that the two religions are covenanted and practiced within very bizarre conceptual frameworks. For standard, Sprigg and other conservative Christians persist in extolling redemption as an important star of their belief that Buddhism lacks. But to Buddhists, this is inappropriate. It might be said of Buddhism that it is a means to catch on regard, way down and intimately, why we don't necessity to be redeemed.

So, Mr. Sprigg, I care you well with the redemption detail, but some of us are doing beautiful without it.

Of route, it's uncertain to contrive judgments about things one doesn't surmise from. I have the help of having been a zealous Christian earlier in my viability, and I engage a reasonably upstanding sympathy of Christian theology. And I still genuinely regard for Christianity, in injure of the foremost efforts of the Brit Humes and Peter Spriggs of the have to repay it look bad.
