Hatha yoga poses - Hatha Yoga


I just started a hatha yoga program, is it normal for beginners to feel a little tense during the poses?

My back feels tense while I'm doing the moves but after I can feel it stretching.


Absolutely normal. It's good that you don't push yourself and you give yourself time to warm up. The last thing you want to do is injure your back. It sounds like you are listening to your body as yoga teaches you to and not over doing it.
It's normal for even those who practice a lot to sometimes have tight muscles and have to warm them up a bit before they can fully go into poses.

What is the difference between Kundalini yoga and Hatha yoga?

I want to know what is the real difference between these 2 types of yoga?
Any difference in poses? Which one is more stretching? Which one is more energetic?

Anyone can describe what a session in a Kundalini class is like?

Hatha yoga is a particular system of Yoga introduced by Yogi Swatmarama. Hatha Yoga is one of the two branches of Yoga that focuses on the physical culture. (see Wikipedia) Hatha yoga is known as "yoga of posture"

Kundalini yoga focuses on psycho-spiritual growth and the body's potential for maturation, giving special consideration to the role of the spine and the endocrine system in the understanding of yogic awakening. Kundalini is a concentrated form of prana or life force, lying dormant in chakras in the body.(see Wikipedia) Kundalini yoga is known as "Yoga of awareness".

The Kripalu style makes Yoga at Olbrich Gardens much different than any other class around town. Kripalu is a blend of three types of yoga: Hatha yoga, mindfulness and tantra. 

“Unlike yoga classes that are based on holding yoga poses, our poses are more gentle and soothing,” Garber said. “It has a really different feel than most yoga classes because it is not a forced thing.”
