Wayne L. Westcott: Here's the lowdown on which stationary bike is best for you
03.10.11
A few years ago, we completed an eight-week research study that culminated with a comparative analysis of upright and recumbent cycling.
The purpose of this research project was threefold:
1 - To observe the effects of cycle exercise on body composition and physical fitness.
2- To monitor perceived exertion, heart rate and blood pressure responses during each upright and recumbent cycling session.
3- To compare perceived exertion heart rate and blood pressure during identical work levels on upright and recumbent cycles.
Based on the results of the initial fitness evaluation, each participant was placed on a cycling program with appropriate exercise intensity and duration. After an introductory period, each participant alternated workouts on the upright and recumbent cycles. At each training session perceived exertion, heart rate and blood pressure were measured and recorded at rest, at five minutes, at 10 minutes, at 15 minutes and at 20 minutes.
