Good workout routine using hand weights and a mini stair stepper?

I, like everyone else, am trying to start an excersize routine this time of year. I know to start slow and work your way into it. I want to know what sort of warm-up/cool-down and stretches would be best with the mini stair stepper, and how to use the hand weights to get the maximum effect. Thanks!
