In less than a month, city council will vote on the future of aquatics in Wetaskiwin.

What that future might look like, was presented to members of city council at the Oct. 24 regular meeting.

Steve Bushnell, from Barr Ryder Architects, presented the three different scenarios for consideration.

• Remove the current Aboussafy Aquatic Centre at a cost of $250,000, plus the $1 million the city has already committed to the project.

• Repair the Aboussafy pool, which would cost approximately $3-to-5 million. Repairs would include a new roof, mechanical repairs, and structural improvements. Repairs would only increase the lifespan of the Aboussafy Centre to another 10 to 15 years.

• The third option is to construct a new Wetaskiwin Regional Aquatics Facility. The total cost of the project would be $18.6 million, with the city responsible for a little more than $7 million. The rest coming from grant funding, cost sharing with the County of Wetaskiwin, and sponsorship dollars.
