UFC 136: Florian wants gold at Aldo's expense
Kenny Florian hopes dropping to 145 pounds will finally deliver a title this weekend after two unsuccessful tries at lightweight.
"I've always learned from each previous camp, win or lose," Florian says. "I've made a lot of mistakes. I'm thankful for those mistakes."
Florian is scheduled to challenge featherweight champion Jose Aldo on Saturday at UFC 136 (8 p.m. ET, Spike TV; 9 p.m. ET, pay-per-view) in Houston. The title opportunity comes after just one bout at 145 pounds for Florian, but the challenger argues that his overall career justifies a rapid elevation.
His resume has gritty losses in 155-pound championship bouts, but also includes victories over other men who have fought for belts. In his only 145-pound bout, he won a convincing decision in June over Diego Nunes, No. 6 at the time among featherweights in the USA TODAY/MMA Nation consensus rankings.
A win against Florian on Saturday would be Aldo's fourth consecutive title defense, one short of the featherweight mark set by Urijah Faber as champion of World Extreme Cagefighting before its absorption by UFC.
