HARRIS: Pumped-up goals fill Ashland's gyms
09.02.10
Prompted by New Year’s resolutions and tweaked in their determination by Valentine’s Day, many Ashland people are joining health clubs to get in shape for spring and summer. And the fabled rule, "no pain, no gain," is being modified by the clubs to meet the needs of most ages.
Tracy Cadina, night manager of Gold’s Gym on Homer Avenue, told us there has been a 50 percent increase in membership since the beginning of January. Her clients exercise on treadmills and elliptical machines and in Cumba (Latin dance), body pump classes, boxing and martial arts, yoga, karate, steam rooms and sauna.
Bob Savine, owner of Fitness Together on Eliot Street, also reports a 25 percent enrollment increase. His facility has a five-person staff and similar equipment, including dumbbells, barbells, treadmills, elliptical machines, stationary bikes and more.
Savine adds that clients train in private rooms. He stresses accountability.
"We work one-on-one with all our clients," he said. "One of the first things we do is sit down with a new member and talk about specific goals so that each session is customized to that individual’s needs."
