Golds Gym Elliptical Machines Fitness - Fitness Equipment

Are the chain fitness centers good to join?

So I recently moved and am looking at gyms in the local area. There seems to be quite a few options: Gold's gym, Bally, 24 hour fitness are all available. I am mostly interested in free weights but would also use cardio machines like treadmill and elliptical. Can anyone recommend one of these places?

It would be better to join chain since there is a much less chance they will go out of business. I go to Las Vegas Athletic Club. I would suggest going to each of them to compare. I have only been in a 24-hr fitness once and wasn't impressed. Gold's has a reputation for steriod heads.

Anyone have a review of the Epic E 950 Elliptical?

I was looking at the Horizon EX-44 elliptical (and still #1 on my list) but I found the Epic brand online with a model that offers an adjustable stride (18-20") length and adjustable incline (10-30%), but I have been unable to find any reviews of the machine.

Further research discovered that they are manufactured by Icon Health & Fitness ( http://www.iconfitness.com/ ) whose brands include Nordictrack, Weider, Pro-Form, Healthrider, Reebok, Golds Gym and others. In fact it looks like it is being branded under Reebok too as the Reebok RL 900 Elliptical.

I found the machine at this link:

http://www.epicfit.com/webapp/wcs/stores /servlet/Product2_10651_10101_16151_-1_1 2004

Has anyone bought/used the machine and if so do you have any insight you can offer? I like the concept of the adjustable incline and 18-20" stride length but I don't like to jump in a pool without checking for water first.

In general, any of the product made by Icon Fitness is going to be of a lower quality, even the higher priced units. Based on what I see here in our service/repair shop, the units tend to last under a year before needing major fixes.

The Reebok units used to be great, but once Icon took them over the quality dropped immensely. The adjustable stride on the Epic is iffy at best..it's built to try and duplicate what SportsArt does with their adjustable ellipticals, but with lower grade parts and manufacturing.

I'd say avoid the Epic and stick with Horizon, New Balance (although the units are very long), Spirit or even Schwinn.

Gold's Gym Express open today in Normal

NORMAL -- What will people see when they walk into the new Gold's Gym Express in Normal?

"Seventeen thousand square feet of pure fitness," answers co-owner John Morgan. The health club opens Monday at 1503 E. College Ave.

The Normal site is the second Express in the nation. Morgan and David Horine, operating as Morine Inc., own the local Express and the traditional Gold's Gym at 11 Currency Drive, Bloomington, which will remain open.

Morgan said he eventually would like to open at least 10 Express gyms in Central Illinois.

Express is a smaller version of the full, 56,000-square-foot gym, and is located in a small shopping mall at the site of a former grocery store. The conversion required a $1 million renovation.

Express has 100 cardio machines, two sets of circuit equipment, a full weight room and locker room. Members can join for a minimum $9.99 per month with no contract, about $30 per month cheaper than the larger gym.

"People might think since it's called Express, it's scaled down, but we still provide a full service at a very affordable price for people that don't need all the amenities of the bigger club," said Morgan.
