Do you think that high school PE should focus more on strength and weight training - and should the gov't help?
Oct 24, 2009 by Proust | Posted in Politics
When I was in high school in the late 90's/early 2000's, our regular PE program was mostly geared toward cardio fitness stuff - running, aerobics, and low-impact sports.
I had to get a special variance to get out of the regular PE program and into the weight training program. I wanted to get jacked and buff.
Fortunately, my variance came though, and I linked up a free period with my weight training period, and as a result, I had a 100-minute workout block each school day. It was pretty awesome. I'd do my workout and then protein load during lunch.
Of course, back then, it was easy to order androstenedione, superdrol, halodrol clones, and other good stuff on line.
So basically, I got jacked, along with my friends. I went from the same height in freshman year (6'1") but only 155lbs (I looked horribly skinny) to a ripped 224lbs by the end of high school. Those are some sick gains. I was benching over 450lbs and looked totally intimidating. It was great. I did a few epistane/deca-durabolin cycles along the way to break plateaus, but I mostly did this without anabolics, the natural way.
But anyhow, I notice that a lot of highschoolers these days are skinny or weak. It's embarrassing; it reflects badly on themselves and the country.
As a teen, I found my physique very useful when it came to playing sports, impressing and dating girls, and generally gaining confidence. It made me happier, and improved my academic performance. This helped me get into a top college, followed by a top law school.
Anyhow, should we put a lot more federal funding into high school weight programs and nutrition programs to help America's teens do what I did, in terms of physical development? Should we incentivize schools to convert their PE programs into weight-training programs?
I think the most important thing is that kids develop a healthy lifestyle and healthy relationships with others- away from video games and chat rooms. They need to get out and exercise and relate to people face to face.
I don't think it is necessary for every boy to be "jacked." I think if a boy wants to build man-sized strength he should watch Rocky IV. Building natural strength through chores, farming, or manual labor develops a strong character and work ethic while getting in shape. Why do you think Rocky beat the Russian? Because he had the inner strength. Honestly, women desire more of this kind of guy than one that can bench press a Cadillac. Sure, he might get a few flings down at the bar, but no woman would ever settle with a man like that unless he's got that inner strength.
Working out for the sole purpose of looking huge is a weak foundation for building confidence. All it takes is a car accident or deforming disease and you are completely destroyed.
This can be accomplished without government involvement. The change does not need to be primarily in school programs, but in the hearts of the young men to desire to work hard and develop a lifestyle of fitness and a strong work ethic- this is true "American"- whatever that means.

"Something is always better than nothing," says Bill Lutz, a personal trainer from Waldwick with 30 years of experience under his elastic belt.
Folks with lifetime memberships to Bally's, or with enormous basement rooms specially fitted out with top-of-the-line treadmills, rowing machines and incline benches, need not apply. Those who should: people without the money or time for a gym membership, or without the space for a home fitness center. They're limited to whatever equipment can slide under the bed, be tucked away in a closet or fit snugly in the corner next to the flat-screen TV.
"Anyone can get in shape, even with limited space," Lutz says. "But the key component is the human being at the machine — not the machine used by the human being."
