Sun Microsystems (JAVA) share are trading sharply higher this morning on signs that the European Commission is likely to approve the sale of the company to Oracle (ORCL) .
As Reuters reports , the EC said in a statement that it was optimistic that “a satisfactory outcome was possible.” The regulatory body had previously expressed concerns about Oracle’s acquisition of Sun’s MySQL open-source database software unit.
Oracle promised to keep the market open for others to make storage engine software for the MySQL database, and agreed not to seek commercial licenses from makers of MySQL storage engines. The company also pledged to boost R&D spending on MySQL, and to set up a customer advisory board of MySQL users. The Commission said in a statement that Oracle’s promises were “significant new facts.”
“Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes … is optimistic that the case will have a satisfactory outcome, while ensuring that the transaction will not have an adverse impact on effective competition in the European database market,” the EC statement said.
